Hayden Panettiere, ‘Scream’ and ‘Heroes’ Star, Dies at 36

Panettiere died in South Carolina, according to multiple outlets reporting Sunday. A cause of death has not been released, and further details surrounding her death were not immediately available. She would have turned 37 on August 21.

Kirby Reed, Twice Over

To horror audiences, Panettiere is inseparable from Kirby Reed, the horror-literate teenager she introduced in Scream 4 in 2011. The character, created by franchise screenwriter Kevin Williamson, was written as the movie-nerd of her friend group and quickly became one of the most-liked additions to the series in years.

Kirby’s fate at the end of Scream 4 was left unresolved on screen, and fans argued about it for more than a decade. In 2023, Panettiere returned in Scream VI, with Kirby reintroduced as an FBI agent brought in to help track Ghostface through New York City. It was her first major screen role after several years away from acting.

A Career That Started Early

Panettiere began working as a child performer and broke through with the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans. Her other early credits include Raising Helen and Ice Princess.

From 2006 to 2010 she played Claire Bennet on Heroes, the indestructible cheerleader at the center of the show’s first season and one of the defining network-television characters of its era. She followed it with six seasons as country singer Juliette Barnes on ABC’s Nashville, from 2012 to 2018, a role that brought her two Golden Globe nominations.

Recent Years

In May 2026 Panettiere published a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she wrote about her struggles with mental illness and substance abuse. She had spoken publicly about those struggles for several years before the book’s release.

Her younger brother, the actor Jansen Panettiere, died in February 2023.

Tributes from horror fans and industry figures began appearing within hours of the announcement, many of them centered on Kirby Reed. This is a developing story.
